Showing a lot of love towards someone;
“I watched the mother looking lovingly at her children”

This Lifestyle family home session – with the cutest newborn and her big brother – was simply wonderful. The family lives in a beautifully decorated house from the ’30s. And seriously? That window seat?! (see below) It’s got the WOW-factor several times over! A photographers dream.

Little Vicky was just 4 weeks old and the whole family was so in love with her – most of all, her big brother Viggo. He couldn’t keep away from her and kept hugging and kissing his baby sister. When he realized he was going to be photographed too, he wanted to style his hair to “cool”, hence all the fun mirror images of him brushing and styling his hair.

Going with the flow

This was a typical lifestyle family home session, where we had prepared for several everyday activities to keep it fun for the five-year-old – things like dancing, singing, and trampoline jumping. However, in the end, we ended up just going with the flow and letting things happen naturally. I was clicking away and little Viggo just did his thing, smiling and laughing all the way.

That is, of course, the best way of doing a lifestyle family session – keeping it natural and real. But nevertheless, it’s imperative to be prepared.  You never know how things will work out or how the kids (and sometimes dads;)) will react to having a photographer in their house.

Preparation is everything

In preparation, I always send my clients an online questionnaire to fill out before the session. I ask them about the things they do together as a family, the kids’ favorite activities, their character etc. I also ask them to describe their family with ONE word.

What is YOUR word?

Have you ever given some thoughts to how you would describe YOUR family with just ONE word?

This family’s chosen word in Dutch is LIEFDEVOL, which translates to Lovingly. I kept this word in the back of my mind during the session and ended up with images full of love and affection. Knowing things about the family beforehand as well as preparing them on how I work and what to expect, helped me customize the session to their specific wishes and needs. It also made me feel like I knew them before I even met them in person.

Below are some of my favorite images from the session, but there were so many more! You can see more images in my portfolio gallery about this specific session as well as the lovely slideshow below that I created for the family (make sure to have the sound on!)
