Foodhallen Amsterdam

Hi, and welcome to my second article in my travel series about Amsterdam. Every week I will give you my best tips about what to see and visit in this beautiful city and today I want to show you the wonderful Foodhallen, the first indoor food market in the Netherlands.

An international food market

The Foodhallen, open since Oct. 2014, is found inside the former tram depot of Amsterdam. The building is an industrial heritage complex and gives this place a unique design and a very special atmosphere. A fun detail is that you can still see the old tracks on the ground.

Foodhallen is located in Amsterdam north, an up and coming trendy and laid back area within only 30 mins walk from the most central area of Amsterdam. It is easily reachable by tram 7 or 17 and even has its own garage below the building should you arrive by car.

Something for everyone

The retail food market has 21 small independent restaurants representing all corners of the world, including a bar selling drinks in the center. If you visit with a group of people all wanting different cuisines, you have no worries here. You each pick up the food you want and meet in the common eating space in the middle.

Hotel de Hallen

This new and unique design hotel, open since May 2014, is located inside the Foodhallen building. As I live close to Amsterdam, I don’t normally stay in hotels here and can’t recommend hotels in Amsterdam based on personal experiences. Have to say though, the look and feel of this hotel, really made me want to do try it, even though it’s just 40 minutes away from home. If you do try it or you have stayed here, I would love to hear about your experience in the comments below:)
