Be ware of the bikers!

The Streets of Amsterdam are always full of life and energy, people strolling by, bikers riding and owning the streets, cars and mopeds doing their best to move along. Something you should know if you’re visiting the city for the first time is that Amsterdam is ruled by bikers, so take good care of where you walk and always look out for them, either you’re walking or driving! Don’t walk on the bike paths, they don’t like tourists walking in their way and they don’t readily stop if you are.

The visuals in this article are taken in the center of Amsterdam, within the canal belt. Most are from the inspiring and popular “9 straatjes” and Jordaan area.

City of alleys

The center of Amsterdam is a not only a city of canals, it’s also a city of alleys; narrow streets with challenging, but interesting light conditions and visual treasures just waiting to be found. I love to explore these alleys, always finding new and interesting motives, as well as a piece of quiet in the middle of the hustle and bustle that is urban Amsterdam.

In some alleys you’ll find the walls of the old buildings are getting help for staying up straight…

The narrowest alley, Trompettersteeg, is only 100 cm wide, but is still one of the busiest streets in Amsterdam because of it’s location in the middle of the Red light District.

A little piece of heaven

Even in the midst of the busiest times in Amsterdam, you can find quiet and empty places. Just move away from the busy shopping streets and you’ll find these little pieces of heaven just around most corners.

Details

While walking the streets of Amsterdam, you might notice lovely or interesting details, like old beautiful doors and windows, unique and typical Dutch architectural features, flowers, tiles, the old pavements, old or colorful bikes, cute concept stores etc. There’s no limit to what you’ll find if you look closely. Stay tuned for more about the details of Amsterdam in a later article, but there’s also some inspiration in my earlier article about the Flower market.

That’s all for today! Hope you liked my street visuals and that they make you realize the unique beauty of Amsterdam. Stay tuned for more “my amsterdam” next week.
